Practical Guide to Rainwater

Simple steps and creative ideas for collecting and reusing rainwater in your household, protecting natural resources and caring for your garden.

Choose a Decorative Barrel A wooden or ceramic barrel, placed near the corner of the house, becomes a landscape feature. A capacity of 100–200 liters is suitable for a 50 sqm roof. Install a simple gutter from plastic pipes without cutting existing downpipes.

Connect a Soaker Hose Use a hose with small holes, placed at the base of plants, to water seedlings and rose bushes. Rainwater, soft and chlorine-free, nourishes the soil without accumulating salts. Raise the barrel on a low platform to create natural pressure.

Install a Drain Spigot Mount a simple spigot 10 cm from the bottom of the barrel to wash paved paths and garden tools. Use a long-handled brush and water from the barrel to remove soil and plant debris without chemical detergents.

Protect the Barrel from Leaves Cover the barrel with a metal screen or a perforated lid to prevent clogging with leaves and twigs. Clean the screen once a month, especially in autumn. This keeps the water clean for watering and washing, and prevents the barrel from becoming a mosquito breeding ground.

Use Water for Compost Rainwater is ideal for moistening the compost pile. Pour a few buckets each week over plant debris to speed up decomposition. Avoid tap water, which may contain chlorine and slow down the natural process.
